Established in 2013 through a collaboration between The Jockey Club Institute for Advanced Study at HKUST and the Division of Humanities, the Chinese Creative Writing Program has been a beacon of literary engagement under the leadership of Professor Liu Jianmei. From its inception, we have been fortunate to receive invaluable support from the esteemed literary theorist and writer, Professor Liu Zaifu. Our primary mission is to cultivate a profound appreciation for the humanities within our university, fostering direct engagement and meaningful exchange between faculty, students, and celebrated contemporary writers, poets, scholars, and filmmakers from both China and abroad.

Since its establishment, the program has consistently invited a diverse array of distinguished guests from literature, art, and cinema to deliver public lectures and conduct writing workshops on our campus. We have proudly hosted numerous large-scale international literary conferences, attracting renowned writers, scholars, and filmmakers from around the globe.

Our workshops and public talks have featured acclaimed contemporary Chinese writers such as Yu Hua, Yan Lianke, Su Tong, Han Shaogong, Zhang Wei, Shu Ting, Chi Zijian, Luo Yi-chin, Huang Jingshu, Wu Mingyi, Li Er, Liang Hong, Shuang Xuetao, Zhang Chu, Zheng Peng, Sun Ping, Jiang Fangzhou, Xu Zecheng, and Chen Chuncheng. Additionally, our film festivals have celebrated the works of distinguished directors, including Li Ruijun from China, Jang Cheol-soo from Korea, and Diep Hoang Nguyen from Vietnam.

Since 2013, we have enriched HKUST’s global reputation by hosting numerous international academic conferences. A notable highlight was the Association of Chinese and Comparative Literature Biennial Conference, held on our campus from June 23 to June 25, 2014, which hosted 315 participants and marked one of the largest academic conferences in the Humanities in Hong Kong.

The program has thrived thanks to the active involvement of faculty members such as Sin Wai-kin Professor of Chinese Culture Yan Lianke from IAS, Professor Wu Shengqing, Professor Ma Xiaolu, and Professor Jin Huan from HUMA, who have been instrumental in organizing our literary events. Furthermore, all MPhil and PhD students in Literature have engaged in these activities, contributing to our vibrant community. In terms of financial support, the Chinese Creative Writing Program in HUMA has received significant backing from IAS and SHSS, which have been crucial for our growth. Additionally, Professor Liu Jianmei successfully secured three years of funding from the Tin Ka Ping Foundation from 2016 to 2019. The Sin Wai-kin Foundation will continue to support the program from 2025 to 2030.
